EVENT SUGGESTION.. SING OUR HEARTS OUT...
Adam,
A couple of suggestions for the Tampa March:
A muster of all personnel within ear shot of the convention and:
Sing ALL of the following: (song lists and lyrics to be provided to all present in advance) and (choir practice required at the berthing/main muster location) (high quality sound system essential with experienced technical staff)
Gather background music to be played with each song by a strong, quality system, not like the DC fiasco.
Just imagine a few thousand, maybe ten thousand, bellowing voices singing the anthems of all services and then some… I’m getting goose bumps already, the mere thought of pulling this off gets me a bit teary… damn.. imagine the youtube video… wow… need a bucket truck for taping the event.
I’ll help coordinate this item if required… my daughter is an experienced professional production stage manager and maybe would assist also.
BTW…. We sailors and air-dales appreciate all the jar-heads, a term of endearment, serving as our security force… Max Meindl, AGA, VAW-121 Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron, US Navy, 1969-1971
SING FIRST:
God Bless America By Irving Berlin (Born Temum, Siberia, May 11, 1888; died New York, September 22, 1989.)
God bless America Land that I love. Stand beside her, and guide her Through the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, To the prairies, To the oceans white with foam. God bless America, My home, sweet home.
God bless America My home, sweet home.
Then: (the muster can sing or get an experienced, high quality vocalist, with a high quality PA system) to sing the following:
Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key
O! say can you see by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the Rockets' red glare, the Bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our Flag was still there;
O! say does that star-spangled Banner yet wave, O'er the Land of the free, and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country, shall leave us no more? Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave, From the terror of fight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave, O'er the Land of the Free, and the home of the Brave.
O! thus be it ever when freemen shall stand, Between their loved home, and the war's desolation, blest with victory and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land, Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto - "In God is our Trust;"
And the star-spangled Banner in triumph shall wave, O'er the Land of the Free, and the Home of the Brave.
Then:
My Country Tis of Thee Samuel F. Smith
My country, 'tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims' pride, From every mountain side Let freedom ring.
Let music swell the breeze, And ring from all the trees Sweet freedom's song; Let mortal tongues awake; Let all that breathe partake; Let rocks their silence break, The sound prolong.
Our fathers' God to Thee, Author of liberty, To thee we sing, Long may our land be bright With freedom's holy light, Protect us by they might Great God, our King.
Then: (the following in any order, random drawing maybe?)
Anchors Aweigh The United States Navy Theme Song (my favorite and a close second is the Marine hymn)
Stand, Navy, out to sea, Fight our battle cry; We'll never change our course, So vicious foe steer shy-y-y-y. Roll out the TNT, Anchors Aweigh. Sail on to victory And sink their bones to Davy Jones, hooray!
Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh. Farewell to college joys, we sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay. Through our last night on shore, drink to the foam, Until we meet once more, Here's wishing you a happy voyage home.
The Marines Hymn
From the Halls of Montezuma To the shores of Tripoli We will fight our country's battles In the air, on land and sea. First to fight for right and freedom And to keep our honor clean; We are proud to claim the title United States Marine.
Our flag's unfurled to every breeze From dawn to setting sun; We have fought in every clime and place Where we could take a gun. In the snow of far-off Northern lands And in sunny tropic scenes; You will find us always on the job -- The United States Marines.
Here's health to you and to our Corps Which we are proud to serve; In many a strife we've fought for life And never lost our nerve. If the Army and the Navy Ever look on Heaven's scenes, They will find the streets are guarded By United States Marines.
The Army Goes Rolling Along The official United States Army Theme Song Based on "The Caissons Go Rolling Along" by Brigadier General E.L. Gruber
March along, sing our song, with the Army of the free Count the brave, count the true, who have fought to victory We’re the Army and proud of our name We’re the Army and proudly proclaim
First to fight for the right, And to build the Nation’s might, And The Army Goes Rolling Along Proud of all we have done, Fighting till the battle’s won, And the Army Goes Rolling Along.
Then it’s Hi! Hi! Hey! The Army’s on its way. Count off the cadence loud and strong (TWO! THREE!) For where e’er we go, You will always know That The Army Goes Rolling Along.
Valley Forge, Custer’s ranks, San Juan Hill and Patton’s tanks, And the Army went rolling along Minute men, from the start, Always fighting from the heart, And the Army keeps rolling along.
Then it’s Hi! Hi! Hey! The Army’s on its way. Count off the cadence loud and strong (TWO! THREE!) For where e’er we go, You will always know That The Army Goes Rolling Along.
Men in rags, men who froze, Still that Army met its foes, And the Army went rolling along. Faith in God, then we’re right, And we’ll fight with all our might, As the Army keeps rolling along.
Then it’s Hi! Hi! Hey! The Army’s on its way. Count off the cadence loud and strong (TWO! THREE!) For where e’er we go, You will always know That The Army Goes Rolling Along.
The United States Air Force Song:
Off we go into the wild blue yonder, Climbing high into the sun. Here they come, zooming to meet our thunder; At 'em boys, give 'er the gun! Down we dive, spouting our flame from under, Off with one hell-of-a-roar! We live in fame or go down in flame. NOTHING WILL STOP THE U. S. AIR FORCE!
Semper Paratus (Always Ready) The United States Coast Guard Theme Song
From North and South and East and West, The Coast Guard's in the fight. Destroying subs and landing troops, The Axis feels our might. For we're the first invaders, On every fighting field. Afloat, ashore, on men and Spars, You'll find the Coast Guard shield.
We're always ready for the call, We place our trust in Thee. Through howling gale and shot and shell, To win our victory. "Semper Paratus" is our guide, Our pledge, our motto, too. We're "Always Ready," do or die! Aye! Coast Guard, we fight for you.
From Aztec shore to Arctic zone, To Europe and Far East. The Flag is carried by our ships, In times of war and peace. And never have we struck it yet, In spite of foe-men's might, Who cheered our crews and cheered again, For showing how to fight.
We're always ready for the call, We place our trust in Thee. Through howling gale and shot and shell, To win our victory. "Semper Paratus" is our guide, Our pledge, our motto, too. We're "Always Ready," do or die! Aye! Coast Guard, we fight for you.
SURVEYOR and NARCISSUS, The EAGLE and DISPATCH, The HUDSON and the TAMPA The names are hard to match; From Barrow's shores to Paraguay, Great Lakes or ocean's wave, The Coast Guard fought through storms and winds To punish or to save.
We're always ready for the call, We place our trust in Thee. Through howling gale and shot and shell, To win our victory. "Semper Paratus" is our guide, Our pledge, our motto, too. We're "Always Ready," do or die! Aye! Coast Guard, we fight for you.
Aye, we've been "Always Ready" To do, to fight, or die Write glory to the shield we wear In letters to the sky. To sink the foe or save the maimed Our mission and our pride We'll carry on 'til Kingdom Come Ideals for which we've died.
We're always ready for the call, We place our trust in Thee. Through howling gale and shot and shell, To win our victory. "Semper Paratus" is our guide, Our pledge, our motto, too. We're "Always Ready," do or die! Aye! Coast Guard, we fight for you.
The Ballad of the Green Beret By Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler and Robin Moore, Copyright 1966
Fighting soldiers from the sky Fearless men who jump and die Men who mean just what they say The brave men of the Green Beret
Silver wings upon their chest These are men, America's best One hundred men will test today But only three win the Green Beret
Trained to live off nature's land Trained in combat, hand-to-hand Men who fight by night and day Courage peak from the Green Berets
Silver wings upon their chest These are men, America's best One hundred men will test today But only three win the Green Beret
Back at home a young wife waits Her Green Beret has met his fate He has died for those oppressed Leaving her his last request
Put silver wings on my son's chest Make him one of America's best He'll be a man they'll test one day Have him win the Green Beret.
Then:
End with Echo Taps, either by EXPERIENCED horn players or via sound system (safest bet).
