The RNC is notorious for stifling free speech. Remember "Free Speech Zones"?

From Wikipedia:
Quote:
The NYPD tracked every planned action and set up traps. As marches began, police would emerge from their hiding places — building vestibules, parking garages, or vans — and corral the dissenters with orange netting that read 'POLICE LINE – DO not CROSS,' establishing areas they ironically called 'ad-hoc free speech zones.' One by one, protesters were arrested and detained—some for nearly two days."

So what do we do about it? Get corralled to the other side of town? Wander in separately, then form up at their front door? Set ourselves up for an altercation that can only end badly for everyone involved?

I know Adam doesn't mind getting arrested for a good cause. A lot of others would lose their jobs, and likely have a hard time replacing them, if they were arrested.

All of that said, is there even an option of getting a permit for such an event?

Getting arrested for this would look good on my resume.

Yeah, this worries me, too.

I consider the permitting process to be legitimate insofar as it is in the interest of coordination, timing, and public safety. (Not legit insofar as asking permission.) So my plan is to go down to Tampa in advance (after phone calls with appropriate officers) to scout locations and sit down with local law enforcement.

What we really need is a private parking lot about a mile from the convention center for a staging area. Preferably something with a parking garage attached so everyone can come and park, then line up in the formation in a way that won't be rushed and difficult like Monday on the sidewalk grass by the street where we'd intended to line up. Perhaps another thread . . .

While there are probably a lot of us that would prefer to get arrested more than not being able to exercise our first amendment rights, I'm not going into this event with the mindset that it's inevitable. If the spirit of the event is the same as it was on Monday (non-confrontational peaceful demonstration), then any violence that ensues will be by the initiation of the authorities. If they're willing to work with Adam cooperatively, and protect our freedom of speech (like they did in DC), then everything will be fine. We always need to remember that our original American Revolution only came to violence when the crown initiated it - we need to preserve our Founders' legacy in yet another way, and honor their attempts at peaceful secession. If we all pledge to make ourselves heard in a way that the *message is confrontational, but the delivery is not, then we won't be antagonizing the police to make them want to initiate violence.
Looking forward to how cooperative they are in the ensuing months ...

The Occupy'ers will be using Lykes Gaslight Park. There are a few parking lots near the port to the north east. I am sure you could use them with out much trouble, No one has used them in 2-3 years. There near Channelside Dr and McKay St.
